==== questions de W.D. Cooley β ====

Questions de Géographie Abyssine proposées par W.D. Cooley.

Alvarez states that going southwards from Tigré, he entered the Doba country by
a sudden descent & then found the seasons to differ from those of Tigré & to coincide
with those of Masuah, that is to say, it was the dry season in the Doba country
when it was the season of the rains in Tigré. From the Doba country (in which
were the towns of Menedely & Corcora, both worth enquiring he ascended
the same valley to the borders of Amhara : now, it would be curious to know at
what point in that valley (the basin of the Ancona) may be set the limits of
the climates of the high & low country & what are the meteorological phenomena
(want of rain, or occasional showers at all seasons?) characteristic of that
limitary district.

==== γ ====

Alvarez describes Shoa to be an open country covered with pools, frequented by
immense flights of Aquatic fowls. This is a peculiarity of aspect which M. M.
Combes & Tamisier have failed [ajout] omitted [/ajout] to mention.

==== δ ====

Considering that Abyssinia has deserts on three sides, the phenomena of the
rains, winds, etc. in that country deserve particular attention.

==== origine du mot Abyssin. ε ====

Some writers ventured to suppose that the name of Abyssinia is derived
from that of a certain town in the kingdom of Adel. This notion originated no
doubt in the name aversia (avéssia?) used by some of the missionaries for Aussa
that is Aussa gurel or Auça gurel (whence the Anca gurel of Arrowsmith's'
map) the capital of Adel four days from Zeyla on the road to Fatigar. (NB. the creek or
inlet at Zeyla is navigable four days up, according to old maps. There is no room to
doubt that the same name has been variously written Auessia, Aussa, Auça
(corrupted into Anca. now may we not also suspect with some reason that the
river Anazo into which the Ancona flows, is no other than the Aùazo i.e. hawash ?
Is not the Hawash a general name for river. Is there not a second Abay or
Abawy in the yedjou country ? Poncet, Gobat & Pearce all agree in stating
that the name Tacazé means terrible & Wolf states that it is a general
appellation of rivers. May not all parties be in the right ?

==== Sasù ζ ====

Who were the Sasù mentioned by Cosmas Indicopleustes ? Were they the Zeytes
or shats ? They were certainly somewhere in the direction of the latter.

==== η  ====

Where does the auriferous soil commence ? Bermudes says in the country of
the Gongas (Gonjas?) bordering on Damot.

==== θ ====

It is worth while to learn the color of flooded rivers. The red soil which dies
the Toumet in Fa-zoglo colors most of the rivers of eastern Africa.

==== ι ====

The Somâly are perhaps not known in Abyssinia by that name, but
their habit of dyeing their hair may serve to identify them in description.

==== pepper κ ====

Is pepper indigenous in Abyssinia or the neighbouring countries ? Is the
name which it bears in some of those countries, viz. Berber the root of
[Piperah ?], filfil & (NB. the Arabs every where on the coast of Africa
change
