London’s Retro Revival: Why Vintage Armchairs and Sofas Still Rule

Vintage sofas just feel more real than anything new. My first memory of proper furniture is my grandad’s wingback chair. It sagged in the middle and smelled faintly of tea, vintage style leather armchair but it was part of us.

During the heyday of Soho, an armchair wasn’t just a seat. chairs and sofa lived longer than flats. You can feel it when you sit down.

I rescued a battered armchair from outside a shop in Peckham. Most people would have walked on, but I knew straight away it had something. That chair still sits in my flat.

London’s furniture scene splits by neighbourhood. Belgravia keeps it polished, with buttoned wingbacks. Hackney keeps it raw, with mismatched sofas. The clash gives it character.

Showroom sofas don’t talk back. Old-school sofas become part of your life. Every stain has a story.

When it comes down to it, retro wins because it’s real. An armchair should hug you back.

Before you grab a soulless bargain, take a look at what’s already lived. Take home something with scars, and make it part of your story.
