St. Luke's, Lehigh University collaboration leads to clever, life-saving invention. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Among stories of hope, generosity and togetherness, the COVID-19 pandemic has also given rise to an unbelievable feat of ingenuity â the invention of the "Bug Zapper" to sterilize masks. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â As hospitals and different entrance-line organizations jumped to secure large portions of life-saving supplies and private protective tools (PPE), there has also been the necessity to identify faster, more efficient ways to clean and sterilize these items, notably the coveted N95 masks. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â St. Luke's University Health Network anesthesiologist, Christopher Roscher, MD, anticipated the necessity and an idea began to type. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â The St. Luke's Sterile Processing Department, or SPD, Zap Zone Defender is the place the place all surgical and medical devices are sent to be meticulously cleaned, Zap Zone Defender System sanitized and packaged for reuse.
It is a behind-the-scenes function that's a necessary a part of the well being care system. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â "On any given day, we are processing many, many objects here at our hospital in Bethlehem," states Taylor Bennett, St. Luke's Network Director of Sterile Processing. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â For Dr. Roscher, a light went on â actually and figuratively. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â "I had been doing personal research about finding ways to decontaminate masks for reuse, and peer-reviewed literature prompt that, in a pandemic, UV-C light might be an appropriate strategy to sterilize masks," he says. UV-C is a specific range of UV, or ultra-violet, gentle and has been shown to deactivate viruses and other pathogens by inflicting modifications in their DNA. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â "What St. Luke's was looking for was a high-throughput sterilization system," stated Dr. Tansu.
The two organizations joined forces by a collection of Zoom conferences and tons of of emails, to design, Zap Zone Defender Setup fabricate, set up and test the gadget â all within a matter of two weeks â and all while maintaining social distancing protocols.            The top outcome: a method to successfully and effectively sterilize 200 masks every eight minutes.            "Our current units were not designed for giant-scale use. They could solely sterilize about 30 masks at a time," stated Eric Tesoriero, DO, anesthesiologist for St. Luke's and a collaborator on the challenge.            The unit, engineered by Lehigh students and workers and assembled at St. Luke's by biomedical engineer Jay Johnson, has been affectionately named the "Bug Zapper" not only as a result of its appearance, however due to its COVID-killing properties.
"It is unbelievable that this mission moved at such a rapid velocity," remarks Dr. Tansu.            The workforce ranged from PhDs to MDs and Zap Zone Defender Setup even included an unexpected contributor â Axel Tansu, Dr. Tansu's adolescent son. The truth is, it was Axel's contribution that allowed the unit to have such a high-throughput rate.            "Our unique design was cylindrical in form, to make sure even exposure of the light on all surfaces," explains Dr. Tansu.            A patent to protect the team's intellectual design has been filed. And a celebration for the collaborators to fulfill, in-person, will likely be planned once it's safe to do so. Until then, the Bug Zapper will be arduous at work, helping to protect the frontline staff at St. Luke's and past.            This, like so many other tales, provides a ray of hope throughout the pandemic â showcasing that the human mind and spirit can overcome anything â particularly when working together for a fantastic trigger. In any case, as the famous philosopher Plato understood thousands of years in the past, necessity is the mom of invention.
