A male who was gambling on his phone when he crashed into a car, causing a pregnant woman to give birth too soon, has been imprisoned.


Jack Bentley hit a stationary Nissan X-Trail queuing in traffic on the A50 in Hatton, Derbyshire, on 6 April.


Police stated the chauffeur of the Nissan suffered whiplash and the pregnant traveler was rushed into hospital with a fractured hips. Two other kids in the very same car suffered injuries while the family's pet canine was seriously hurt and had to undergo emergency situation surgery.


Bentley, 30, confessed 2 counts of causing major injury by hazardous driving and was imprisoned for 28 months at Derby Crown Court and banned from for 38 months.


After the crash the pregnant woman had to go through an emergency Caesarean section, leaving her early infant in intensive look after a variety of weeks, when she suffered 2 collapsed lungs.


The infant later on made a recovery and was able to go home.


Derbyshire Police said Bentley, of Meadow Way, Derby, had been taking a trip home from Blackpool when the collision happened at 18:45 BST.


A driver in the left-hand lane caught the video on her dashcam, which was used as evidence.


Bentley, driving in the right-hand lane, did not see the fixed traffic and crashed without altering his speed, cops said.


He was seen previously drifting into the turf verge of the eastbound carriageway in between junctions 6 and 5, in addition to swerving between lanes.


Bentley was apprehended at the scene. Analysis of his phone data following the crash showed he had actually been using his phone while driving, checking out online betting sites, the force said.


'Missed early minutes'


In a victim impact declaration, the mother said: "I needed an emergency situation Caesarean due to my infant remaining in distress. I found this very distressing and didn't desire my child to be born like that and that early.


"My baby was born without skin-to-skin contact and me and my partner had to wait to see her.


"When you have an infant you anticipate to be in a bubble with your partner and newborn however we were separated across 3 wards in the medical facility and missed out on out on a lot in those early moments.


"No mom or father should need to go through this.


"The next 3 weeks we invested in healthcare facility getting our child strong enough to come home."


Following sentencing on 11 February, PC Richard Morris, from Derbyshire Police, said: "This was a terrible display screen of driving by Bentley, who spent most of his journey sidetracked by being on his phone.


"I know that the physical, psychological and emotional injury from this occurrence continues to influence on this family, who were simply heading out their day when this wholly preventable accident happened."
