Life in a student flat starts rough but gets colourful. The flat looked more squat than home, luxury sofas but we built it piece by piece. IKEA lasts a term at best, so we searched markets. We carried a wingback through Dalston. Everything mismatched, but that’s why it worked. Funky retro seating has character, and it fits our lifestyle. I’ve balanced takeaway boxes on a mismatched chair, and the sofa was another character in the story.

Retro furniture feels natural here, and designers take inspiration from it. My flatmate dragged me into Smithers, and everything felt alive, not plastic. we left with just one piece, but it’s become the throne of the house. We’ve all dragged furniture through rain. it’s half the fun. Vintage pieces survive it. Flat-pack won’t last a term, couch and accent chairs but funky chairs grow with you. every dent becomes part of the flat. By the end of the year, the dodgy landlord fades away, but that funky accent chair is legend.

If you find yourself in a Shoreditch flat, forget the catalogue shine. Grab a retro sofa, and unusual chair watch it age with you.
