There’s just a magic in Blue Mountains National Park that gets into your blood. Maybe it’s the towering eucalypts filling the air with that signature blue haze, or the sunset glow painting the cliffs amber while the birds sing their sunset chorus. Whatever the reason, whenever I escape the city and head west, I see again why it’s earned its World Heritage status.

I’ve spent years guiding groups across this area — from Echo Point and the Three Sisters to the Megalong Valley and the limestone caves of Jenolan — and take it from someone who knows, the Blue Mountains are more than a day trip. They’re a deep-breathing antidote to city life, a vast amphitheatre of towering cliffs, cascading falls and eucalyptus aroma.

Only an hour and a half west of Sydney by road, the National Park is part of the World Heritage-listed Greater Blue Mountains Area, a protected area of over a million hectares that extends as far as Wollemi National Park. It’s a mix of canyon systems, forests and cliffs that shelters more than 400 native species, including lyrebirds, wallabies and the occasional shy dingo.
